With three winners, Bedford, Wilczynski and Bland, Shipley came out on top in a 17-12 win, Stradling the single success for Mirfield.

Sixth placed Moldgreen (Pete Wike, Trevor Atkinson, Andy Hoult and Craig Wood) played fifth placed Drighlington (Josh Gamble, Dave Billington, Ann Billington and Charlie Wood). Defending champions Hanging Heaton (Ryan Mitchell, Ian Smith, Steve Wainwright and David Armitage) were in against Old Bank (Dave Sharp, Kevin Morton, Keith Terry and Duncan Terry) and continued their good form of late with maximum points and all winners. Sharp was best for Old Bank with seventeen, 20-09 the match score.

Sowerby West End (Pat Skene, Richard Saunders, Baz Morgan and Geoff Price) just outside the leading group, took on current leaders Mytholmroyd (Shaun Frewin, Andy Gallagher, Mark Jeffries and Paul Fisher). Mytholmroyd are growing in confidence week by week in this, their first season and collected maximum points again. Frewin, in his game with Price, eased away from 6-5 to lead 12-6 and 18-9 going on to take the game 21-12. Jefferies and Morgan were tied at eight across from where the Mytholmroyd man constructed a seven break to lead 15-8. Morgan reached twelve from where points were exchanged, Jefferies getting home 21-16. Gallagher started the better in his game with Skene, leading 6-1 and 11-8 where Skene stuck while Gallagher moved on to seventeen, going on to win 21-14. Fisher and Saunders were nip and tuck right through to eleven each from where Saunders moved ahead to 11-14. Fisher hit back and levelled at fourteen and went two ahead only for Saunders to level again at sixteen, but it was Fisher who finished the stronger running out to record a 21-16 victory.

In the Trophy Hit & Miss (Paul Lowery, Alan Standing, David Avery and Lynn Hobson) played one of the tightest games of the season against a team vying for promotion in Cleckheaton Sports (Tony Quinn, Dave Marshall, Jack Glazzard and Dave Griffiths). Lowery counted three points as he lost to Quinn who took the five points, Standing pulled it back with a tight 21-20 win over Marshall who counted four points. Hobson counted four with a score of nineteen as Glazzard took the five with his win and the final game saw Avery with maximum points with Griffiths counting three. The match was a tie, 17-17.

Next up were another two teams with hopes of promotion, Luddenden (Claire Broadbent, Kay Lund, Judy Cockroft and Mick Skwarek) and All Stars (Marie Lockwood, Linda Gledhill, Lynda Drury and Carole Harpin). This game not quite what was expected as All Stars provided three of the four winners and took the match 17-11, Broadbent best for Luddenden with a 21-11 win over Lockwood.

King Cross (Graham Dewhirst, P McDonald, John Ashton and Terry Jackson) against Drighlington 2 (Charlie Wood, Dianne Hoole, David Scott and S Avison), went with the form. Drighlington provided three of the four winners and took the spoils 17-14, MacDonald was the King Cross winner and Ashton carded twenty in his defeat.

Shroggs Park (E Craven, P O’Callaghan, Joshua Craven and Mike Murray) and Coxenhope (Alan Downing, Gordon Cox, Lorraine Douglas and Fred Rothwell) were two teams at the wrong end of the table. Coxenhope counting sixteen points against ten for Shroggs. There were wins for Douglas, Cox and Rothwell with O’Callaghan the victor for Shroggs.

Mixtures looking for maximum points as they chased leaders Clayton. Smith got the Rastrick side off to a good start as he beat Bentley to eighteen. Heley was off to a flier against Fincher leading 10-4 and 13-7 but from there Fincher took control and ran out with a break of fourteen. Balmforth and Poutney were nip and tuck all the way Poutney just getting home 21-17 to put Sports in the lead. Hewitt, as he often does, steadied the ship in a close game but one that he was always in front as he beat Ineson 21-18. A match result of 15-16.

Mirfield Old Bank (Walt Morgan, Brian Scarth, Dave Sharp and Mel Stradling) against Nomads (Phil Holroyd, James Senior, Steve Rothwell and John Armitage).

The final game in the Shield was Hanging Heaton (Alan Thompson, Malcolm Preston, Ian Smith and Graham Hirst) and Clayton (Alan Peel, Hedley Kettlewell, Ian Johnson and Paul Gill).

The opening game in the Plate was Rastrick (Graham Hall, Donald Booth, Keith Richards and Alan Standing) against Asa Briggs (Trevor Kendall, Malcolm Isles, Graham Pearson and Don Harrison). Captain Hall was first up against Asa captain Harrison, it was a tight game up to thirteen across from where Harrison edged in front and went on to win 21-16. Booth started well against a below par Pearson and went on to win to single figures. Standing and Kendall were close all the way to thirteen across from where Standing edged in front and managed to hold on as Kendall came back but went down 21-18. The final game of Richards and Isles swung the game back in the Queensbury clubs’ favour as an out of sorts Richards struggled against the accurate leading of Isles going down to single figures.

Cleckheaton Sports (Janet Inness, Kath Icke, Dave Griffiths and Joyce Ellis) struggled against the inform Sowerby West End (Andy Wike, John Sharp, Lorraine Hirst and Shirley Dillingham).

Pellon (David Agnew, David Gowing, Mark Bolton and Robert Walker) and Bronte’s (Fred Rothwell, Derek Pollard, Dave Hemsley and Martyn Benson)

Leaders Spen Victoria (Les Mitchell, Barry Firth, Brian Thompson and Gerald Bromley) dropped three points as Lindley B C (Tony Lockwood, Tony Booth, Simon Anderson and Steve Haigh) provided two of the four winners. Firth beat Booth and Mitchell beat Lockwood with Anderson and Haigh the Lindley winners.

Tuesday 11th December 2018

Week five in the Shield commenced with Greetland (Ken Fleming, George Simpson, Gordon Bradford and Pete Lea) looking for improvement against leaders The Mixtures of Rastrick and Elland (Roger Stopford, Trevor Heley, Derek Hewitt and Viv Smith). Bradford started the ball rolling with a 21-11 victory over Smith, unfortunately for Greetland he was to be their only winner. Fleming with nineteen was best of the rest. Mixtures continue their run with a 17-13 win.

Cleckheaton Sports (John Ineson, Paul Fincher, Ian Poutney and Richard Bentley) played Hanging Heaton (Alan Thompson, Malcolm Preston, Ian Smith and Graham Hirst) in a mid-table battle. There were wins for Bentley and Fincher with Thompson and Smith replying and a 14-15 overall score reflected their positions.

Under performing Crosshills (Barry Turnbull, Rod Bastow, Kevin Burnett and Barry McCourt) played fellow strugglers Mirfield Old Bank (Walt Morgan, John Green, Kevin Morton and Mel Stradling), with only a point separating the teams both needed the win. McCourt was just pipped by Morgan but Burnett levelled the scores as he beat Green. It was the final pair of Mirfield who were both winners that pulled off the victory for Old Bank 18-14.

The final game in the Shield was table topping Clayton (Alan Peel, Hedley Kettlewell, Ian Johnson and Paul Gill) against Lindley Libs (Richard Dickinson, Mark Sykes, Richard Saunders and Mike Lee). As has happened in previous weeks Clayton didn’t have it all their own way. Kettlewell and Lee were level at eight across but the Clayton man ran out to record a 21-8 win. Peel was always in front in his game with Saunders and finished a 21-10 winner. Johnson led Sykes 11-7 but they were level at sixteen, from where Johnson went on to win 21-19. Gill was in front 13-4 but Dickinson turned it round and went in front at 16-15 but Gill finished the stronger to record a fourth Clayton win 21-17. A match result of 20-10 which didn’t really reflect the game.

The opening game in the Plate was Lindley B C (Tony Lockwood, Marie Lockwood, Linda Gledhill and Steve Haigh) against Rastrick (Graham Hall, Donald Booth, Ann Heley and Alan Standing). With two winners each and a 13-14 score line both teams would remain mid table.

Silsden (Derek Metcalfe, Alan Hughes, Andy Welch and David Beardsworth) only had one winner against Bronte’s (Fred Rothwell, Derek Pollard, Dave Hemsley and Martyn Benson) in their 12-16 defeat.

Spen Victoria (Les Mitchell, Barry Firth, Kevin Wood and Gerald Bromley) one of this year’s title contenders played local rivals Cleckheaton Sports (Janet Inness, Elaine Binns, Dave Griffiths and Jayne Bradley). Spen did their championship chances no harm as they had all four winners, Binns was best for Sports with nineteen. “A bad day at the office” as Inness the Sports Captain commented.

Sowerby West End (Andy Wike, John Sharp, Lorraine Hirst and Pat Skene) another team with eyes on the championship were matched with Pellon (David Agnew, David Gowing, Mark Bolton and Paul Firth). Wike lost to eleven against Gowing in the first game but Sharp levelled it up with a 21-11 win over Bolton. Hirst won to single figures as Firth struggled without the jack. The best game of the afternoon was Skene against Agnew. Skene led 9-3 and 11-7 but Agnew was in front at 16-11 only for Skene to turn it round again and hit the front 17-16. Agnew counted two singles to lead yet again, Skene countered with a pair and a single to put her in a winning position 20-18. Agnew wasn’t done and three singles took him to game 21-20. With two winners each West End just took the match 16-12 to preserve the last unbeaten record in the Plate.
