There were no Saturday games this week as they were lost to the weather, both greens being under water after more than 24 hours of heavy rain.
Defending Shield Champions Nomads (Phil Holroyd, John Armitage, Mark McGorlick and Les Holmes) were paired with newly promoted Sowerby West End (Lorraine Hirst, Shirley Dillingham, Andy Wike, and Baz Morgan) in the second week of fixtures. Holmes and Hirst were nip and tuck to nine a piece from where Hirst moved on to thirteen, only to see Holmes pull back the deficit and take control going on to win the game 21-16. The second game followed a similar pattern as the recently out of form Armitage and Morgan were level at eights only for Armitage to take the next four chalks. Morgan did make a comeback but Armitage kicked on and ran out a 21-13 winner. McGorlick led Dillingham 8-7 before Dillingham counted five twos to give her a comfortable lead which McGorlick was unable to pull back but still finished with seventeen. Holroyd was behind at 4-7 against Wike but then moved ahead 10-7 and was never behind again although Wike hung in there and at 17-16 it was game on but Holroyd finished with a pair and two singles to clinch the game 21-16. An 18-13 match result.
Mixtures (Viv Smith, Andy Balmforth, Roger Stopford and Derek Hewitt) looking to follow up their opening weeks fine win as they took on the second promoted team Spen Victoria (Dave Billington, Bob Sharp, Gerald Bromley and Derek Goor). There were two winners each, Stopford and Hewitt for Mixtures and Bromley and Goor for Spen, translating to a 16-13 match result as Balmforth’s 20 and Smith’s 14 gained them the extra points.
Lindley Libs (Daniel Bousfield, Richard Dickinson, Richard Saunders and Pete Hopkinson) and Hanging Heaton (Graham Hirst, David Armitage, Steve Wainwright and Mick Armitage) similarly had two winners each, Hopkinson and Bousfield for the Libs and David Armitage and Hirst for the Batley side, Heaton with the victory, 15-13 by virtue of the better scoring losers.
In the final Shield game Crosshills (Barry McCourt, Kevin Burnett, Ken Brenkley and Barry Turnbull) were pitched in against Clayton (Alan Peel, Hedley Kettlewell, Ian Johnson and Paul Gill). Another game with two winners each, Burnett, Turnbull, Gill and Kettlewell but with similar losers the final result was a 14 all draw.
In the Plate the two relegated teams Mirfield Old Bank (Dave Sharp, Terry Varney, Walt Morgan and Dave Bentley) and Greetland (George Simpson, Barry Sugden, Gordon Bradford and Ken Fleming) were paired for the week two round. Greetland carried on where they left off last week, having three winners and Simpson with sixteen, while Morgan was the only winner for Mirfield. 18-12 the match result.
Asa Briggs (Steve McGrevy, Trevor Kendall, Peter Wrightson and Bert Haigh) poor start to the season continued as they couldn’t muster a winner against Silsden (Peter Bailey, Andrew Welch, Derek Metcalfe and Alan Hughes). 20-8 the match score Haigh and Kendall were best for Asa with 15 each.
Bronte’s (Derek Williamson, Geoff Hughes, Lyndon Harris and Dave Hemsley) were against Lindley B C (Mick Thornton, Linda Gledhill, Lynda Drury and Steve Haigh) fresh from a big win last week. Lindley kept up their good work with wins for Haigh, Gledhill and Drury, Hemsley the only winner for Bronte’s. 11-17 the match result.
Cleckheaton Sports 2 (John Wilson, David Griffiths, Joyce Ellis and Jayne Bradley) and Rastrick (Graham Hall, Peter Hardcastle, Alan Standing and Donald Booth) played out the last game of the day. Wilson and Booth were first up and Booth led 11-4 and 13-5 before Wilson made a come back but Booth was still in control at 16-11 and 18-15. A pair and a single made it eighteen all, Booth took the next single for 19-18 but never say die Wilson counted three singles to take the game 19-21. Ellis and Standing was not so close although after a bad start and finding herself 12-2 down Ellis did come back and finished with fifteen. Bradley and Hall exchanged the lead several times in the early part of their game until at 13-12 Hall built a break to move on to all but. Bradley just adding one more before the game finished 14-21. Griffith’s was behind 1-5 to Hardcastle before a mid-game burst put him in control, going on to win 21-14. A final match score of 15-16.
In the opening Saturday Vase game Hanging Heaton (David Armitage, Steve Wainwright, Gordon Bradford and Ryan Mitchell) were paired with defending champions Mytholmroyd (Andy Gallagher, Paul Fisher, Scott McHugh and Mark Jeffries). Hanging Heaton laid down a marker for the season as they provided three of the four winners in Armitage, new recruit Bradford and Mitchell, captain Fisher, with a fine 21-6 win over Wainwright, was the defending champions only success in their 16-11 defeat.
Cleckheaton Sports (Jack Glazzard, Dave Griffiths, Dave Marshall and Andy Walker) could only muster one winner in Marshall as they went down 16-13 to Drighlington (Josh Gamble, Ann Billington, Dave Billington and Derek Goor)
Moldgreen (Trevor Atkinson, Andy Bairstow, Andy Hoult and Andy Wike) a team who haven’t fulfilled their potential in previous seasons started with a 18-12 win over Mirfield Old Bank (Brian Scarth, Mel Stradling, Terry Varney and Graham Sheard). Atkinson, Hoult and Wike were the winners for Moldgreen and Stradling for Mirfield.
Last years runners-up Shipley (Paul Wilczynski, Mike Gadd, Chris Bedford and Dave Bland) stated their intentions with a fine 19-9 win over newly promoted All Stars (Carol Harpin, Lynn Carter, Linda Gledhill and Lynda Drury). Drury the only winner for All Stars as she over came Bland 21-19 in a close game.
First up in the Trophy were Hit & Miss (Alan Standing, David Avery, Paul Lowry and Kath Standing) and Drighlington 2 (Dianne Hoole, Bruce Illingworth, Michelle Jeffrey and Mick Hopkins). A bit of green knowledge came out as Avery and the two Standings all had wins, Jeffrey replying for Drig and Hopkins carding twenty in defeat. 17-11 the overall score.
King Cross (Terry Jackson, Richard McFarlane, Graham Dewhirst and John Ashton) proved no match for the Old Bank Saturdays (Gary Morton, Dave Bentley, Mark Morton and Duncan Terry) team who provided all the winners in their 20-7 win.
There were the closest of games to finish the weekends program as Shroggs Park (Chris Meade Jnr, Mike Murray, Peter O’Callaghan and E Craven) against Sowerby West End (Glenda Hartley, N Parker, L Ellison and Geoff Price) and Ripponden (Mick Skwarek, Josh Craven, Kay Lund and Nick Oddy) against Oxenhope (Lyndon Harris, Dave Hemsley, Gordon Cox and Gary Bowdin) all ended in draws. All teams taking thirteen points to start the new winter season.
Hove Edge Bowling Club rolled out their ever popular Winter League for the 2019/2020 season this week in fine but chilly weather.
Defending Shield Champions Nomads, again led by Phil Holroyd who was “on the bench” this week as James Senior, John Armitage, Mark McGorlick and Les Holmes made up the team to play Cleckheaton Sports (Ian Poutney, Paul Fincher, Richard Cleghorn and new signing Les Mitchell who previously played for Spen). In a closely fought match, with two winners each the defending champs just came out on top 15-13. McGorlick and Senior were victorious for Nomads and Poutney and Mitchell, winning on debut, replying for Sports.
Newly promoted Sowerby West End (Lorraine Hirst, Shirley Dillingham, Geoff Price and Pat Skene) were paired with Lindley Libs (Daniel Bousfield, Richard Dickinson, Mark Sykes and Pete Hopkinson). The Libs took the honours 17-11 although Dillingham and Hirst both won for West End, Dickinson and Bousfield replied for Libs but Sykes with 20 and Hopkinson with 17 made the difference as SWE losers were both in single figures.
Hanging Heaton (Graham Hirst, David Armitage, Steve Wainwright and Dean Scarth) took on Crosshills (Barry McCourt, Rod Bastow, Ken Brenkley and Dave Rankin) who provided three of the four winners in their 19-12 victory. Scarth just getting the better of Rankin 21-19 in a welcome return for the Batley side.
Clayton (Alan Peel, Hedley Kettlewell, Ian Johnson and Paul Gill) and Mixtures (Trevor Heley, Andy Balmforth, Roger Stopford and Derek Hewitt) concluded the first weeks Shield program and it was the Mixtures with three winners and a twenty loser that took the spoils 19-11. Kettlewell the only winner for Clayton.
In the Plate relegated Mirfield Old Bank (Graham Sheard, Terry Varney, Walt Morgan and Mel Stradling) started with a tough game as they were drawn against Bronte’s (David Hemsley, Fred Rothwell, Geoff Hughes and Derek Williamson) who just missed out on promotion last season. In a close-run thing, there were two winners each, Varney and Stradling for Old Bank and Hughes and Hemsley for Bronte’s in the 15-12 result.
Asa Briggs (Steve McGrevy, Trevor Kendall, Peter Wrightson and Bert Haigh) struggled against Lindley B C (Mick Thornton, Linda Gledhill, Tony Lockwood and Steve Haigh) who came out all guns blazing and provided all four winners in their 20-8 victory.
Greetland (George Simpson, Pete Lea, Gordon Bradford and Ken Fleming) another of the relegated teams looking for a flying start to the season as they took on Rastrick (Graham Hall, Peter Hardcastle, Alan Standing and Terry Leach). Greetland were not disappointed as they had all four winners for maximum points, Rastrick finishing with six.
The final match of the day was Pellon (Robert Walker, Mark Bolton, Paul Firth and David Gowing) against Cleckheaton Sports 2 (Tony Quinn, David Griffiths, Janet Inness and Elaine Binns) and this was the closest game. Walker and Firth were successful for Pellon and Griffiths and Binns responded for Sports and losers were all of similar scores and the game finished 14-14.
